Gareth Pugh - Watch the Magic Happen

We love Gareth Pugh. There’s no way around it. Not only are the things he makes fantastic, but he’s kind of every fag I fell in love with during high school, right down to the eyeliner and black nailpolish. Pugh’s designs run the gammut from easy jersey to high concept unwearability. Every piece is carefully considered and carefully constructed by hand — to the degree that there are still questions about his solvency as a designer without funding from LVMH and mothering from Michele Lamy (Mrs. Rick Owens). True, both Rihanna and Beyonce have come by Pugh’s designs thanks to their judicious and deep-pocketed stylists, but in my opinion Pugh is best worn by the people who live it (whatever “it” is), like Trashicist. Bleeding edge fashion always looks best waiting for the G train or slinking down Mercer St.

SHOWStudio has offered an opportunity to watch Pugh work. View the construction of a slashed silk dress (from cutting to assembly) here (via Outi). Every second is worth watching. As expected, Pugh is meticulous. A rotary cutter is a girl’s best friend!

ETA: WATG had a quick mention of Pugh a couple of weeks ago with detail photos from his SS10 collection, which featured handknit ribbon that created a similar effect to the dress for SHOWStudio.
